Why can't you recycle tin cans?

I know I know this might not be the best place to ask this question but its a good place for me to vent about it :)
I can not find any information on how to recycle tin cans in Alaska.  Sure lots of ppl have great ideas for pencil holders and wind chimes and even toy cars but I dont want to reuse these tin cans I want to get rid of them in a better way than sending them to the landfill.
I read someplace online that the tin is very easy and cheap to recycle but doesn't seem to me like its something that is practiced very much if at all and again not here in Alaska.
I like canned goods, Pinto beans, green beans, canned corn, and peas,  I like baby corn and all those other great things that were done right when canned but I dont want to feel guilty for buying them.  I sure as heck dont want to fill my house with a years worth or more of pencil holders.   But in the long run I hate throwing them away :(
So I guess I could just go about making those pencil holders, figure out how to make a wind chime , do some more searching give them away as gifts LOL..

So this is what I did I gave my older daughter a task, to come up with things she can do and make with Tin cans and this is her first pencil holder made out of socks and old winter gloves.  (NOW imagine a house full lol )
